The History of the Stone
The History of the Stone
It takes its name from the river Achates, currently Dirillo, in Sicily where it was discovered.
"Moss" refers to its many fibrous inclusions as if plant moss were inside.
Agate is often associated with gods and goddesses. In Greek mythology, it represents Gaia, goddess of the wild earth and nature. The Celts associated it with Ceridwen, the Welsh goddess of death and fertility. The Romans associated it with Aurora, the goddess of the dawn.
Throughout the centuries it was used to make vases, ornaments and receptacles.
