Abalone Shell
Abalone Shell
The Abalone shell is also called “ear of the sea”.
Widely used by Native Americans, it symbolizes the water element during sage cleansing rituals. In the alchemical process of transforming fumigation, the four elements are represented: the shell symbolizes water, the match that lights the incense is fire, the herbs and ash are earth, and finally the smoke is the air element.
Grainy and dull on the outside, the abalone shell is very shiny and iridescent on the inside and has several natural holes, ideally placed to ventilate the smoke produced by the sage fumigation.
Abalone shell also has excellent heat resistance however, for prolonged use it is best to hold it on its side.
Use:
Place the equivalent of a small handful of sage or a bundle in the shell. Light the leaves in several places, when the smoke is thick, carry out your ritual, fanning using the flat of your hand or a large feather.
